Weight Loss Clinic
is a dedicated centre of excellence. Our carefully selected team
of healthcare professionals cares for patients who have been
unable to lose weight by diet and exercise and are looking for a
safe, long term weight loss solution which will significantly
improve their health.
Experience and care
Your weight loss treatment is led by a consultant surgeon who is
fully experienced in laparoscopic (key-hole) weight loss
treatments. You will meet Mr David Hewin – a
Gloucestershire-based NHS consultant surgeon who is a Fellow of
the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England (FRCS) -at all your
appointments prior to surgery, and regularly throughout your
aftercare programme.
Your consultation
It is important for anyone considering weight loss surgery to
understand the medical, psychological, behavioural and financial
aspects of treatment. Mr Hewin will take the time to discuss
your medical history, to understand your weight loss goals and
to answer your questions during your initial consultation.
Mr Hewin will provide an honest and professional opinion, based
on his experience and best practice. A medical examination will
be carried out, including measurements and photography. This
forms an important part of your medical assessment.
Not everyone is suitable for surgery and you will be advised of
suitable treatments, or alternatives should you need to consider
other options.
Weight loss surgery is a life changing event and the Weight Loss
Clinic team provides detailed patient information to inform you
fully about the benefits, alternatives and risks of weight loss
surgery before proceeding to treatment, to help you make your
decision without pressure.
Following your consultation
You will receive a detailed summary of any issues discussed and
any proposed treatment. A full estimate of any costs will also
be included. Again, you will be reminded of the risks involved,
together with pre and post operative care instructions.
It is essential that you make an informed decision based on
sound professional advice and we encourage you to make the
decision that is right for you. If you have further queries, we
would be very happy to arrange a further consultation at no
additional charge.
Booking your operation
If you decide to proceed with weight loss treatment, our Patient
Care Co-ordinator will make all the arrangements and you will
receive detailed written information about the procedure and
preparation for surgery. A deposit is not necessary, although
payment will be required before treatment begins.
Preparing for surgery
If you are having a general anaesthetic, our Consultant
Anaesthetist will meet you for a full anaesthetic assessment
which will include blood tests.
Our Specialist Nurse will contact you to complete the detailed
medical questionnaires and provide information about how to
prepare for treatment.
You will also meet with one of our Dieticians for a lifestyle
assessment. They will recommend an appropriate pre-operative
diet for the week before surgery and provide you with
pre-operative hamper.
An appointment will be made with our Clinical Psychologist to
discuss your proposed treatment.
The day of your treatment
Your safety is our primary concern and you will be cared for by
a highly qualified professional team throughout your treatment
and aftercare.
You will be seen before treatment to confirm the procedure that
will take place. Every effort will be made to ensure you feel as
relaxed and comfortable as possible during your short hospital
stay and Mr Hewin will check on you regularly before visiting
you prior to your discharge.
Aftercare
We provide a comprehensive personalised aftercare service that
is tailored to your needs and the treatment you have received.
We contact you regularly in the first few days until you feel
confident with the treatment and comfortable with the changes to
your day to day life. We provide a 24 hour emergency service,
and provide detailed written and face to face to support with Mr
Hewin and the Registered Dieticians at regular intervals to help
you succeed in your weight loss journey.
