How
Adjustable Gastric Banding is Performed
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric
banding aids weight loss by limiting the amount of food the
stomach will accommodate before feeling full. It is a
restrictive procedure.
People can expect to lose at least 60% of their excess weight
with a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and many
obesity-related illnesses improve significantly, especially type
2 diabetes.
A soft hollow silicone band is placed around the top of the
stomach to create a pouch. This small pouch means a sensation of
fullness is reached with smaller portions of food, thereby
reducing the quantity of food that can be eaten. The operation
is carried out by a laparoscopic (key hole) technique which
means there is no stapling or cutting of the stomach. The
operation takes around one hour and usually requires one
overnight hospital stay. Patients can return to work in one
week.
Progress is monitored at regular review sessions. Your ongoing
support and aftercare includes gastric band adjustments - which
means the band will be tightened or loosened to your individual
weight loss requirements.
Although all surgery is associated with some risk, the
complication rate of this operation is low. The Weight Loss
Clinic will provide you with full information about the specific
risks of this type of surgery.
