How it works:   The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band restricts the stomach capacity allowing you to lose weight and maintain weight loss
Suitable for:   Patients with a severe weight problem who need a long term solution
Patients with a BMI of over 40 or with a BMI of 35-40 and weight related health problems such as diabetes

Procedure:   This is a laparoscopic (key-hole) procedure
A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. This pouch restricts the capacity of the stomach allowing you to eat just small amounts before feeling full
Anaesthetic   A general anaesthetic
Operating time   This is a 40/80 minute laparoscopic (key-hole) procedure
Overnight stay   Routine stay of one night after surgery
Recovery time   Patients able to drink water 2-3 hours after the procedure
How long before achieving results   Patients start to lose weight after the first laparoscopic gastric band adjustment at 8 weeks
Post op   Over a two week period, patients are able to enjoy normal food, just less of it
Folllow up   Initial contact by Specialist Nurse
4 week appointment with Registered Dietician
8 week appointment with Consultant Surgeon for first laparoscopic gastric band adjustment
10 week appointment with Registered Dietician
Further appointments will be made for laparoscopic gastric band adjustments and Registered Dietician advice
