The intragastric balloon provides a non-surgical method of
limiting the amount of food you eat, helping you take control of
your weight before surgery becomes your only option.
Intragastric balloons are appropriate for people who are obese
and have failed to achieve and maintain weight loss with a
supervised weight control programme alone.
It works in two ways. A soft, silicone intragastric balloon is
placed in the stomach through the mouth using an endoscope. The
inflated intragastric balloon is in place for 6 months and
limits the amount of food you can eat before feeling full. A
professionally supervised educational programme runs in parallel
to the intragastric balloon placement, to help you make the
lifestyle changes needed to maintain weight loss when the
intragastric balloon is removed.
The procedure takes around 20 minutes, and you will stay at the
clinic for observation for around one hour. Patients can return
to work the next day.
Progress is monitored at regular review sessions. Your ongoing
support and aftercare includes Registered Dietician
consultations during which you will learn to make lifestyle
changes to maintain the weight loss you have achieved with the intragastric balloon. After six months, the balloon is removed,
again using an endoscopic procedure.
